Sports for Champions

On the Thursday 28th of February, Millbrook Primary School welcomed a very special visitor, 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games hopeful Megan Fletcher. She competes professionally in Judoka (Judo). Megan was representing Sports For Champions who help athletes raise funding to compete at the top level. As part of this they offer the opportunity to Primary schools across the country to be visited by professional athletes from a wide range of different sports with the aim to “Inspire children of today… To be champions of tomorrow.”

Before half term the children in Years 1—6 were set a challenge to collect as many sponsors as  possible. They were sponsored to complete a challenging circuit training session set by Megan. The children all played their part working as hard as they possibly could on the day and all with a massive smile on their faces! Megan did say that every single child that took part in the circuit training was a credit to Millbrook Primary School.

Once all the classes had successfully completed the circuit training they gathered in the hall for a special assembly. Megan gave the children an insight into her life as a professional athlete, the training she does, the food she eats and she even brought in her 2014 Commonwealth gold medal for everyone to see. The stand out part of the assembly was the demonstrations and the chance to have a go. One child even got the chance to “Judo throw” a teacher. (Something they won’t forget in a long time!)  After the assembly the children that had raised the most money stayed behind to have a signed picture taken with Megan, they were even lucky enough to wear her Commonwealth Gold medal.

Thank you to everyone who kindly raised sponsorship money. With your help Millbrook raised a massive £1,198.50, part of which will support Megan in her bid to compete at the Olympics and several hundred pounds which will be used by the school to help buy new sports and PE equipment.
